Edinburgh Set to Join Gigabit Full Fibre Premier League

Edinburgh is next in line, alongside Stirling, to be transformed as part of CityFibre and Vodafone’s partnership to roll-out ultra-fast, Gigabit-capable full fibre broadband across the UK.

The announcement, which brings the total number of homes and businesses identified as part of the partnership to over half a million premises across seven cities, represents an investment by CityFibre of £110m in the cities.

With the full support of The City of Edinburgh Council, a detailed planning and construction programme is underway and will build on CityFibre’s existing Gigabit City networks in the city - which are already accelerating the digital capabilities of businesses and the public sector customers. Construction to homes and businesses across Edinburgh will begin this year, with CityFibre using modern build techniques to deploy the networks quickly and minimise disruption to residents.

Commenting SNP MSP for Edinburgh Pentlands, Gordon Macdonald, said, “This is great news for Edinburgh and reaffirms that the Scottish Government’s ambition for every home and business in Scotland to have access to superfast broadband by 2021 is working. It is a significant step towards ensuring that Edinburgh, and the entire of Scotland, has the digital infrastructure it needs to thrive in an increasingly digital economy – and also a real vote of confidence in the future of Scotland’s digital economy.

“Access to gigabit broadband speeds will help Edinburgh continue to attract and preserve innovative technology companies, whilst importantly benefiting thousands more Scottish homes.”
